Emerging technology has excited humans since the first person put a round rock on a wooden axle.

Today, digital advances that link our physical world to the virtual world create real disruptions for society. New platforms leverage the effects of networking so increased numbers of people improve the value of goods or services. A challenge stems from the potential for developing “walled gardens” or closed technology platforms that do not support common standards for security, privacy, and data exchange. Learn how DHS is working with public and private partners to ensure emerging technologies—such as autonomous capabilities, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and blockchain—are secure and trusted so innovation can be built on a foundation of standards-based interoperability.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn how the DHS S&T Silicon Valley Innovation Program (SVIP) is finding new technologies that strengthen national security with the goal of reshaping how government, entrepreneurs, and industry work together to find cutting-edge solutions.

2. Understand the variety of mechanisms that DHS has in its toolbox to enable work with talent from universities, national laboratories, large companies, and innovative startups to conduct everything from applied research to product development.

3. Learn about markets and funding opportunities that exist to leverage government as a catalyst, collaborator, and partner. Tell DHS what is needed to remove barriers and direct investments for short- and long-term needs.
