Security on The Ledge: Transforming Willis Tower, an American Icon

Security on The Ledge: Transforming Willis Tower, an American Icon

March 18, 2020, 9:45 AM - 10:45 AM

Sands 305

Step out on the ledge and explore the security at Willis Tower from the inside out. The 1,450-foot-tall skyscraper is undergoing an unprecedented $500M redevelopment, including 300,000 square feet of dining, entertainment, and tenant amenities. As a DHS SAFETY Act designated-site, balancing the demands of the buildings distinction with the competitive leasing market and trends toward open, collaborative workspaces is a challenging feat. We will explore how the design team weaves physical security and technologies into the renovation, embracing a five-star operational experience in this high-population, high-throughput symbol of Chicago. Our interactive case study will explore the SAFETY Act designations, security trends in high-rise environments, and strategies for mitigating security threats to modern workspaces.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the SAFETY Act distinctions and the re-certification process to determine whether this distinction makes sense for participants’ organizations based on the practical requirements.
2. Learn ways to incorporate security controls into aesthetically pleasing, collaborative work environments serving diverse populations, including Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials.
3. Understand how to use design strategies, built upon threat and risk assessments, to both balance these requirements and foster stakeholder buy-in for security programs.
