Enabling the Drone Revolution While Securing our Urban Environments

The commercial drone market is growing exponentially. A few years ago, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) were purely military aircrafts. Today, commercial drones are widely available, relatively inexpensive, and feature top-notch military-grade capabilities. While most drones are used for legitimate and positive purposes, many are used irresponsibly or maliciously - jeopardizing aircrafts in airports, penetrating our privacy, illegally recording sports (such as the Olympics) and other events (and thus violating IP rights), smuggling drugs and weapons into prisons, attacking or harassing political figures, and even carrying-out terror acts. Limiting and controlling rogue drones is a priority for commercial organizations, governments and defense organizations. Thousands of travelers were unnecessarily stranded when a rogue drone (or more) was sighted above Gatwick Airport just before Christmas 2018. Unnecessarily, not because of the potential risk – there are considerable threats coming from rogue drones which cannot be ignored. But unnecessary because with the right technology, any such threat is not only neutralized but also the responsible parties can be apprehended to avoid future incidents. This is a particularly complex issue when dealing with rogue drones in urban environments, where traditional methods of drone detection are inefficient and the available mitigation techniques are illegal and dangerous. A solution to this issue must take into consideration many aspects such as; legitimate drones in the area (and be able to distinguish between these and rogue drones), various communications and GPS signals, and limited line of sight. In this session, we will address these challenges and the answers to guaranteeing safer cities and urban environments, while enjoying the benefits of drone technology.
