New at ISC West: Becoming More Proactive to Improve Security

Staying ahead of ever-changing threats and challenges in 2019

The security world is constantly evolving. This year's ISC West embodies that—not only through its SIA Education@ISC West conference programming, but also through the content offered by the 1,000+ exhibitors & brands including over 200 new exhibitors and 100 new speakers.

In the past, physical security products like cameras and access control solutions were the primary focus. Today, reflecting on the dynamic nature of the market–there is a big expansion for topics like cyber-physical convergence, IoT, drones and robotics, AI, and using technology that can detect everything from gunshots, weapons and drugs, to an impending water leak. "The intent is to be more proactive rather than reactive," says Will Wise, Group Vice President, Security Portfolio at Reed Exhibitions.

One highlighted issue will be stadium/event security. Russ Butler, Vice President of Security for the San Francisco 49ers and Levi's ® Stadium, will be giving a keynote address (Sponsored by: ADT Commercial) on the morning of Thursday, April 11th. Butler will be reviewing some of the recent security threats, challenges and encounters his team has faced, while providing insights and perspectives on where stadium security is heading. James A. DeMeo, CEO of Unified Sports and Entertainment Security Consulting, LLC, will also be speaking on how to take a holistic approach to big-event security, and the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security (NCS4) will be running an afternoon workshop on "The Stadium of the Future".

Technology is obviously an important part of the equation according to DeMeo. Stadiums are starting to use fast-pass entry lanes to keep people moving as they enter, but efficient exiting still needs attention. Challenges like these highlight that security is all-encompassing. "It's cyber and it's physical," DeMeo says. And since challenges are ever-changing, sharing knowledge is key, and being at ISC West becomes even more essential to stay current.
