Standards-Based Secure Identity Credentials: Leveraging the Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Specifications for Commercial Credentialing Programs
Tuesday, March 27, 2012
9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
The U.S. Federal government’s Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credentialing program has created a set of standards and specifications for secure, standards-based credentials. Commercial organizations can leverage the PIV, PIV-interoperable (PIV-I) and Commercial Identity Verification (CIV) specifications to implement a secure identity credential than can be used for physical and logical access and that takes advantage of the wide range of conforming access control products, which can be purchased from a variety of suppliers.
What is this workshop about? This Smart Card Alliance Educational Institute workshop will provide commercial enterprises with an understanding of the PIV, PIV-I and CIV specifications and the physical and logical access applications that they can support in a converged credentialing program. The workshop will begin with foundational sessions on smart card technology and the PIV-I and CIV specifications, describe the use of a converged PIV-I or CIV credential for physical and logical access, discuss the changes needed to migrate to this standards-based approach, and review. The workshop will conclude with a panel of commercial organizations who have implemented identity credentialing programs based on the standards.
Who should attend? This workshop is relevant to corporate CIOs, CSOs, security directors and IT directors and to system manufacturers and integrators who are offering access control products in the commercial market. The workshop will provide practical guidance for commercial organizations who are seeking to understand how to leverage standards in implementing a secure identity credential that can be used within the commercial organization and/or with government agency partners.
Morning Sessions
- Session 1 (30 mins): Smart Card Technology 101. This session will provide a foundation on the basics of smart card technology, applications and standards. Topics covered will include: smart card form factors; smart card interfaces; major smart card access control applications; smart card acceptance technology and standards.
- Session 2 (30 mins): PIV, PIV-I and CIV Credentials. This session will describe the policy and credentialing requirements and technology similarities and differences among PIV, PIV-I and CIV credentials.
- Session 3 (30 mins): Drivers for Standards-Based Credentials. This session will describe the drivers to move to standards-based credentials and the benefits of using credentials based on the PIV-I and CIV specifications.
Break (15 mins)
- Session 4 (45 mins): Physical Access with PIV-I and CIV Credentials. This session will describe how PIV-I and CIV credentials are used for physical access, including the credential features supporting logical access and the changes to current physical access control systems that are needed to support the new credentials
- Session 5 (45 mins): Logical Access with PIV-I and CIV Credentials. This session will describe how PIV-I and CIV credentials are used for logical access, including the credential features supporting logical access and the changes to current logical access applications that are needed to support the new credentials.
Afternoon Sessions
- Session 6 (45 mins): Migration Strategies to a Standards-Based Converged Credential. This session will describe migration strategies for organizations moving to a PIV-I or CIV converged credential.
- Session 7 (30 mins): Identity Credentials on Mobile Devices. This session will discuss using mobile devices to store and use identity credentials for physical and logical access.
- Session 8 (30 mins): Standards Strategy for Converged Physical and Logical Access Systems. This session will look beyond PIV-I and CIV at the key standards that organizations should consider in implementing a converged identity credential.
Break
- Session 9 (30 mins): Wrapping It Up: Steps to a Converged PIV-I or CIV Credential. This session will outline key steps that an organization should take in developing a plan to move to a converged PIV-I and CIV credential and the resources that that are available to find solutions (e.g., APL).
- Session 10 (60-75 mins): Lessons Learned Panel. This panel will include commercial organizations who have implemented or who are planning to implement PIV-I or CIV credentials. The panel will discuss why the organization moved to standards-based credentials and the lessons learned from the implementation
