Education Advisory Board

The ISC West Education Advisory Board is comprised of a mix of visionary manufacturers, end-users (including law enforcement and campus security), integrators and adult education experts including SIA, the Security Industry Association. Board Members are involved in helping shape the curriculum for all job functions and levels and play an important role in helping identify speakers and specific session topics. The goal is to deliver the most meaningful and critical program to the advancement, continued productivity, efficiency and intelligence of professionals across physical security and networking.

As president of Integrator Support, Sharon Shaw is responsible for developing and managing an extensive dealer base, as well as cultivating relationships with strategic partners including manufacturers and service providers. Ms. Shaw is also responsible for strategy, direction, and implementation of all marketing and sales initiatives.

Before coming to Integrator Support, Ms. Shaw was the Director of Education at PSA Security Network, where she worked for five years. Before her time at PSA, Ms. Shaw worked in the real estate industry.

Ms. Shaw speaks frequently at industry trade events and serves on the TechSec Advisory Board, the ISC Education Advisory Board, and the PSA Education Advisory Board.

Barbara Shaw, CPLP

Barbara Shaw is Director of Education at PSA Security Network. Ms. Shaw not only works with PSA Security Network, but also with vendors, integrators, individual consultants and thought leaders from throughout the industry.

Barbara has been in the industry since 1996, starting as a vertical market specialist and then moving on to commercial and nation account sales. In 2000 Barbara found a love for education, working in training and development with one of the largest companies in the security industry. In addition to this experience, Barbara has also earned the Certified Professional in Learning and PerformanceTM (CPLP) credential from the American Society for Training & Development (ASTD) Certification Institute. 

Dr. Bob Banerjee

Dr. Bob Banerjee is Senior Director of Training and Development for NICE Systems’ Security Division. In this position, Banerjee develops programs and initiatives to educate, train and support NICE’s extensive network of security system integrators and dealers, and provide thought leadership for NICE’s security industry outreach efforts. Banerjee has more than a decade of high tech and security industry experience, having also held senior marketing and global product management positions at Bosch Security Systems, Intuitive Systems, OneSource Information Services, Axeda Systems and Nortel Networks. A recognized expert in PSIM, IP video, and other security technologies, “Dr. Bob” is a frequent speaker at industry conferences. He has also published numerous articles on a wide range of security topics. He holds a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from the Advanced Research Center at the University of Bristol, England.

David LaRose, CHPA, CPP

David is currently the Director of Security Education and Training for Memorial Hermann Healthcare System Integrated Protective Services. David previously held the position of Assistant Director Training and Crime Prevention for Hospital Shared Services, and served as the Criminal Justice Chairperson for Northeastern Junior College, where he was the Director of the Police Academy, in addition to serving as a Colorado police officer from 1984 through 2006. He also served as an adjunct criminal justice professor for several private colleges in Denver, Colorado.

David has 28 years of police, security and safety experience. He is a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) with IAHSS, and a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) with ASIS International. He holds a Masters degree in Criminal Justice Administrative Management and a Bachelor's degree in Criminology.

David is the current Vice-President / Secretary of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Executive Board. David previously served as an active member of the IAHSS Council on Education from 2008-2010. He is a current member of the ASIS International Healthcare Committee.

David routinely lectures on workplace violence in healthcare, crime prevention and numerous healthcare and educational training topics. He has written training articles ranging from workplace safety in healthcare, safe patient control, personal and property protection, customer service, etc. He was interviewed by Birzer and Roberson where his professional law enforcement experience was profiled in “Police Field Operations”, Pearson publishing. David has served as a manuscript reviewer for Prentice Hall publishing. He reviews subjects in security, policing, corrections, and criminology. David also served on the education subject matter expert committee for the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board.

John Szcygiel

As Executive Vice President of Brivo Systems, John is responsible for product development, marketing and sales for the SaaS provider of physical security management systems. In this role John continuously interacts with customers to determine how Cloud Computing and SaaS can be leveraged for improved implementation of physical security applications. He has over 28 years of experience in the security technology domain having served in leadership positions for such companies as MATE Intelligent Video, Siemens Building Technologies, Security Technologies Group and Sensormatic Electronics.

Lars Suneborn

During his 30 + year career in the security industry, Mr. Suneborn has served in a variety of roles. Currently he is leading HIRSCH development of FIPS 201 compliant products and related system enhancements.

Recognized as a Physical Access Control System (PACS) subject matter leader, he is a frequent speaker and a serves a second term as Chair of the Smart Card Alliance Physical Access Council. Mr. Suneborn is actively involved in industry groups developing open standards for smart card and related system components. He is actively promoting Smart Card, biometric and PKI cryptographic technologies as vital components in overall system designs for high-risk, high-security facilities nationally and internationally. He is guiding US agencies in their efforts to achieve HSPD-12 / PIV compliance of enterprise level PACS.

His clients include US, British and Canadian government agencies. His experience includes system design, deployment and long term sustainability programs for government facilities world wide.

Mr. Suneborn developed and conducted agency specific week-long training courses for a variety of US, Canadian and British security agencies

Jeff Roach, Ed.D

Jeff has worked as Training Manager for Gallagher since July of 2009 and is responsible for training development in the US, Canada, Caribbean, and Central America. Prior to working with Gallagher, Jeff was a Training Manager for Pelco with responsibilities to coordinate internal training and online course development. Jeff started with Integral Technologies as their Training Manager in 2005 and worked with both video and access control until Pelco and Integral Technologies merged as an extension of Schneider Electric.  Jeff has a doctorate in educational leadership and curriculum development and has served in educational roles as a teacher, administrator, and university faculty prior to working in the security industry.

Morgan Hertel

Morgan is a keystone resource defining technical requirements to vendors and to the industry. For over 30 years he has done everything from wire pulling to complex system implementations in the field. Today he manages one of the leading central stations in the industry and is active on SIA, ESA, and CSAA committees. A regular speaker on all central station subjects, Morgan is renowned for participation on the Accent List Server where he has shown an exceptional breadth of knowledge that he willingly shares.

Bob Hayes

Hayes has more than 25 years of experience developing security programs and providing corporations security services including eight years as the CSO at Georgia Pacific, and nine years as security operations manager at 3M. Hayes was one of the first security executives to successfully implement unified management of corporate security, computer security, and business conduct and compliance programs in a Fortune 100 company. His security experience spans the manufacturing, distribution, research and development, and consumer products industries as well as national critical infrastructure organizations. Additionally, he has more than 10 years of successful law enforcement and training experience in Florida and Michigan.

Bob is a recognized innovator in the security field and was named as one of the 25 Most Influential People in the Security Industry by Security Magazine. He is a frequent speaker at key industry events, including those produced by The Brookings Institute, International Security Managers Association (ISMA), and Secure World Expo. He is a leading expert on security issues and quoted by such major media outlets as The Wall Street Journal and Forbes.

Laurie Aaron

Laurie Aaron is Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer at Building Intelligence, Inc., the top provider of cloud and enterprise based solutions for vendor, visitor and vehicle idenitity and access management.   Prior to that she was Vice President of Business Development at Quantum Secure, Inc. an innovator in the physical identity and access management (PIAM) market.   At Building Intelligence Laurie will be responsible for the growth of the company by developing and executing business plans which include strategic sales, marketing and alliance initiatives.  Ms. Aaron has over 18 years experience in the physical security industry with particular focus on the convergence of IT security with physical security. Mr. Boucherle has successfully guided top-tier companies in achieving enhanced security using his own Return on Security Investment methodologies. Arminda Valles-Hall is the director of Education and Training for The Security Industry Association. With an extensive background in educational program development, volunteer management and strategic relationship building, Valles-Hall is poised to help SIA enhance and grow its education and training initiatives. Previously, she served as the education officer for a professional society dedicated to enhancing the skills and knowledge of research administrators around the world. Valles-Hall also directed the operations and curriculum development of an education center that helped Washington, D.C.-area nonprofit organizations increase their managerial and operational capacities and efficiencies. A native Californian, she currently makes Arlington, Virginia home with her husband, Len, and five-year-old son.

Robert Hile

Rob Hile contributes more than 20 years of security industry experience and his executive career has involved working for both private and public entities, including several Fortune 500 Global companies.  Prior to joining IFSSI as Chief Executive Officer, Hile served as Senior Director, Enterprise Fire and Security Solutions at Siemens Industry Inc., where he led the security division within the Building Technologies group, providing customized solutions for intelligent response and business continuity for global and national accounts. Previously, Hile was Director, Integrated Security Solutions at Siemens, where he spearheaded the delivery of complex integrated solutions for cities and critical infrastructure organizations. Over the course of his career, he has held senior-level positions with G4S, Convergint Technologies, GVI Security Solutions and TAC. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and currently serves on the Security Industry Association educational advisory board. Hile is also former Chairman and founding member of the Physical Security Interoperability Alliance.

John Hunepohl

John Hunepohl, PSP, is Director of Education for ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions, overseeing the education, training and certification programs for the company and the company's customers.

He has been an active volunteer for SIA educational programs and is currently the Vice-Chairman for the SIA Education Committee.

Mr. Hunepohl began his security career in 1968 as a certified locksmith in Antioch California. He has also held various positions in wholesale distribution and manufacturing for companies supplying a wide range of security products including locks, access control, biometric, CCTV, alarm monitoring and accessories. He was National Sales Manager for Checkpoint Systems ACPG as well as project manager for the first Checkpoint released Windows based electronic access control software in 1995.

After ASSA ABLOY acquired Indala from Motorola in 2002, Mr. Hunepohl became National Sales Manager for the company until being tasked with starting the Integrated Security Specialists Group for ASSA ABLOY Americas in October, 2004.

Mr. Hunepohl has been a member of the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) since 1980. In 2003, he was one of the first to obtain his ASIS Certification for Physical Security Professional (PSP).

John Hunepohl, PSP has more than 40 years of experience in the security industry. He is a member of ASIS International, Security Industry Association (SIA) and Door Hardware Institute (DHI) and serves on educational committees as a volunteer in order to improve the education and training of our industry.

David Kraus

DDavid Kraus is the Director of Security at Impax Laboratories, a pharmaceutical manufacturing company based in Hayward, California. David has worked in security management for over twenty years, primarily in industrial and healthcare security. Prior to his current position David served as the Director of Security for the Northeast Bay Area of Kaiser Permanente Healthcare (Northern California). Previously David also spent five years as the Director of Security, Parking and Transportation at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, Florida. His experience also includes positions as the Manager of Corporate Security at Quaker Oats Company in Chicago, and as site security manager for Abbott Laboratories in Dallas, Texas. David is a CPP and graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is also a member of A.S.I.S., IAHSS, NADDI, and the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering.

Fredrik Nilsson

Fredrik Nilsson is the general manager for Axis Communications with responsibility for the company's operations in North America since 2003. In that time, he has helped the company increase the revenue five fold and has been instrumental in leading the industry shift from analog closed circuit television to network video.

Mr. Nilsson also serves on the SIA (Security Industry Association) Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He is a trusted industry speaker and has spoken at more than 20 conferences, including the keynote address at TechSec Solutions. He has spoken at influential shows such as Securing New Ground, ASIS Emerging Trends in Security, ISC West, ISC East, and Interop. Mr. Nilsson has been in top publications such as The New York Times, USA Today and the Washington Post. He has also appeared on television shows such as CNN Headline News, CNBC's Wake Up Call and the Fox News Channel's Fox & Friends. He has written articles for, and been quoted in, many publications in the security industry, including Security Magazine, Security Management and Security Systems News. He is also a regular columnist for SecurityInfoWatch.com, and has authored a book Intelligent Network Video published by CRC Press.

Prior to working for Axis, Mr. Nilsson served as a product manager for ABB, a global leader in power and automation technologies.

A graduate of the Lund Institute of Technology, Mr. Nilsson holds a master's degree in electrical engineering, which he followed up with post-graduate studies in economics.

Steve Surfaro

Steve Surfaro is Axis Communications Strategic Channel Manager and Security Industry Liaison. He works with end users, consultants, telecom providers and systems integrators to achieve successful Network or SaaS-based video applications. Prior to Axis, Steve served as group manager and strategic technical liaison at Panasonic. Prior to that Steve was an account manager at Wells Fargo Alarm Services.

A regular contributor to numerous industry forums and blogs, Steve has been quoted and published in many Infrastructure, Safety and Security-related publications such as Access Control, Security Director News and Security Products.

Steve recently completed a significant contribution to BICSI's CCTV and Integration Chapters for their upcoming Electronic Security Manual. Steve holds a bachelors degree in engineering from The Cooper Union.

Jason Schimpf

Mr. Schimpf is the Director of Sales Operations and Partner Relations for Arecont Vision, the leading manufacturer of megapixel IP video solutions.  In Schimpf’s eight years at Arecont Vision, he has contributed significantly in most areas of sales and marketing.  After three successful years of managing sales channels on the east coast, Schimpf joined the marketing team to develop the A&E, Reseller and Technology Partner Programs.  He also authored Arecont Vision’s core education material, which became the Channel Partner Certification Program.  In 2013, Schimpf added sales operations, customer service and inside sales to his responsibilities.  Additionally, he serves on the SIA (Security Industry Association) Education Advisory Board.

Mr. Schimpf holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
